Presentation Abstract

To fully understand the renaming of one of the Project Management Institute’s Talent Triangle from Soft Skills to Power Skills one must first realize one of the primary purposes of using project management is to establish and provide a foundation of relevant and timely DECISION SUPPORT information.

This change of names emphasizes the importance of mastering these skills to assure the project manager and his/her organization is achieving the objectives of the project in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

As a veteran of more than 50 years in the world of project management I have become abundantly clear that all of the data in the world (including AI generated) may not result in a project that accomplishes the desired outcome.

The project manager must constantly draw upon the Power Skills to help convert data to sound decisions. Remember data is data and only people can analyze and communicate the information in a way that leads to highly productive people all moving in the best direction.

This presentation will share what I have learned about three of these Power Skills:

  • Communications
  • Conflict Management
  • Negotiation
